My Encounter with Spinner Dolphins

It was my last week in Hawaii, in the fall of 2001.  I went to college and lived in Hawaii for 6 years and I was headed back to the U.S. Mainland to live.

My friend suggested that we go snorkeling on the North West side of O’ahu.  This area was known as one area where spinner dolphins would come into.

I was so excited.  I had the opportunity to study the spinner dolphins for my senior thesis.  I made land observation on two areas of the Big Island where they were known to come in and rest during the day.

For a whole year, I observed their beauty and energy from the land, never in the water.  So, when my friend suggested this trip, I just had to do it.  In fact, my mom was helping me make the trip back home so she came with us too.

We drove up the coast and didn’t find any signs of the dolphins.  We picked a spot and parked the car.  We decided that we were going to get our snorkeling gear on and head out.

The waves were pretty harsh getting out and because of that my mom decided to stay on shore.  So, my friend and I swam out a distance and just hung out in the water, taking pictures of ourselves and enjoying the view.

Then all of the sudden the dolphins showed up.  It was like magic!

There were about 20-30 dolphins in the pod and a few babies.  They came in from the south side of the Island.  It felt as if time stood still.

As they approached us, I remember feeling very calm and excited.  I was in awe of how they swam as a unit, a group.  So connect with each other but also open to the fact that my friend and I were in their environment.

They swam around us, under us and in front of us.  Their energy was so embracing.  I felt so comfortable in the water.  No fear and no worries came over me.  It was pure bliss and excitement.  I remember feeling their vibrations and hearing their clicks.  I was so thrilled to be in the water with them.

There was a mom with her baby and I was in awe of how close they came to us; that really made me feel secure and trusted by them.

I don’t remember how long we were in the water but they stayed with us in the area for awhile then they started to head North.  When they did, my friend and I came back to the shore with huge smiles on our faces and pictures in our cameras!

The magic didn’t end there because as we were getting ready to leave the area, we saw a Hawaiian monk seal swimming by, with its head above the water.  It truly was an amazing day.  I hold this memory in my heart and carry their energy with me everyday.
